Welcome to the African Elephant Database (AED) 1998 page. The web version of the AED98 report is in portable document format (PDF), and you must have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed in order to view it.

This site uses byte-serving technology, which means that you can access the various sections of the AED by clicking on the links below without having to wait for the entire pdf document to download, as long as you have the Acrobat Reader browser plugin installed. Once a page is displayed, you can navigate to any part of the document using the bookmarks pane (click on the

button in the Acrobat toolbar and then click on the Bookmarks tab).

If you prefer to download the entire AED 1998 report (~11 Mb), right-click (two-button mice) or Ctrl-click (one-button mice) here and save the file to your hard disk - you will still be able to navigate the document using bookmarks as described above.

Regional and Country Reports

Regional reports provide overviews, maps and summary tables of elephant population estimates at the regional level. The country reports are the core of the AED and include in-depth information on elephant surveys, distribution maps and detailed tables of population estimates.

AED Survey Zones and Elephant Distribution Maps

To view maps (in pdf format) of AED survey zones and elephant range in specific countries, click the country of interest on the map below. A tooltip label showing the country name will pop up when you rest the mouse pointer over any range country. Non-range countries are shown in grey and cannot be selected.
